URI "Anchor Songs" Collection

Post by Wayne » Sun Jan 29, 2017 2:58 pm

Dear Fellow Music Teachers,

Songs anchor a musician to his or her teaching practice. When teaching music, a musician requires a vast repertoire of songs to meet the varied needs of students. The URI NAfME chapter is offering a song collection—Anchor Songs—to music teachers in various settings. General music teachers, choral teachers, and private teachers may benefit most from the Anchor Songs collection, but all music teachers will find the collection useful.

Anchor Songs was compiled and edited by URI NAfME chapter advisor, Audrey Cardany. She compiled and edited over 230 songs from various cultures and languages including the songs that have anchored her music teaching with musicians of all ages.

Music teachers will find primarily folks songs in Anchor Songs, however, pop music and composed songs are included. The songs are fully indexed by pitch and rhythmic elements, meter, form, game or activity, and language. Indices are essential aids for music teachers when selecting songs for teaching. For example, if you need a song that focuses on the pitch fa, you’ll find a list to choose from.

Each song is notated with lyrics and the analysis of the song. Many songs have game or activity descriptions as well as identification of the teaching purpose of the song. For example, “Bow Wow Wow” is a great song to teach re or practice quarter rest! The collection is meant to “grow” with the teacher, with plenty of white space for individual teacher notes from their own lessons.

The collection is available for $30 for NAfME members and $40 for non-members. Make check payable to URI MENC (old name is used for bank purposes) or make arrangements to pay in cash. All proceeds go toward the NAfME chapter to support music education-related workshops and other needs of the chapter. Contact Dr. Audrey Cardany at Audrey.Cardany(at)uri.edu or 401-874-5590 to order, or snail mail to URI NAfME, c/o Audrey Cardany, University of Rhode Island, Music Dept., 105 Upper College Rd., 02881.

“Anchors away,” fellow music teachers! We hope you join us in this musical voyage through this sea of songs!
